Lighting care / BUYING GUIDE

When should you replace xenon headlight bulbs?

One headlight looks different, a lamp has stopped working, or the road ahead seems less clearly lit. Before ordering replacement xenon bulbs, take a moment to check the system and the exact bulb fitting.

The quick answer

Have a failed or noticeably changed headlight checked promptly. Confirm the cause and the bulb code before buying. If both xenon bulbs are of a similar age, replacing them as a matching pair can help keep the lighting consistent.

Start with what has changed

Perhaps one headlight no longer comes on, the light flickers, or the two sides look different. Note whether the problem is constant or intermittent and tell your technician. A change in how a headlight behaves is a reason to investigate, rather than a reliable diagnosis on its own.

A xenon headlamp includes more than its bulb. The ballast, wiring and electrical supply also matter. HELLA’s technical guidance describes checking these parts when investigating a failure. Replacing a bulb without establishing the fault may leave the original problem unresolved.

Why consider replacing bulbs as a pair?

Headlamp bulbs age in use. A new lamp beside an older one can give a less consistent result than two matching replacements. Philips recommends changing headlamp bulbs in pairs to help maintain balanced lighting.

It can also be convenient to have both sides replaced during the same workshop visit. Ask the technician to assess the remaining bulb and the condition of the headlamps before deciding.

Pair replacement is a useful maintenance approach, rather than a rule for every product. Some specialist lamps are designed for single-lamp colour matching. Always follow the instructions for the actual replacement you choose.

Check the fitting before the colour

Read the code on the existing bulb or check the vehicle’s parts information. D1S and D3S identify different HID systems; a similar-looking base or matching 35W description does not establish compatibility.

Use our D1S vs D3S guide to understand the checks, then compare the exact listing with the headlamp fitted to your car. Different lighting options can exist within the same model year.

A simple pre-order checklist

  1. Confirm the fault. Ask whether the bulb, ballast or another component needs attention.
  2. Match the bulb code. Check the original fitting and the intended headlamp system.
  3. Check the pack. Read the description to confirm whether you are buying one bulb or a pair.
  4. Arrange suitable fitting. HID xenon systems use high voltage. Use a qualified technician and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure.

Find your next pair

Browse our TTRP Racing D1S xenon pair or TTRP Racing D3S xenon pair once you have confirmed the fitting. Product pages show the current price and availability.

If you are unsure, email our team with the make, model, year and original bulb code. We’ll help you compare the listing details before you order.
