D1S vs D3S xenon bulbs: how to choose the right replacement
D1S and D3S bulbs can look very similar, but they belong to different HID headlamp systems. Start with the code on the original bulb, not the shape of the base or a vehicle badge.
Replace D1S with the correct D1S bulb, and D3S with the correct D3S bulb. A shared 35W rating does not make the two fittings interchangeable.
What is the difference between D1S and D3S?
The fitting code identifies the bulb family used by the headlamp. D1S and D3S systems have different electrical requirements and keyed bases. As an example, OSRAM’s XENARC ORIGINAL data lists D1S at 85V and D3S at 42V, both at 35W. These are bulb operating specifications, not a claim that either bulb connects directly to a car’s 12V supply.
| Check | D1S | D3S |
|---|---|---|
| Original bulb marking | D1S | D3S |
| Typical base designation | PK32d-2 | PK32d-5 |
| Example nominal voltage* | 85V | 42V |
| Replacement choice | Matching D1S HID system | Matching D3S HID system |

Three checks before you buy
- Read the original bulb code. Check the bulb marking, your handbook or a reliable vehicle parts record. If access is difficult, ask a technician to identify it.
- Confirm the headlamp version. The same make, model and year may have different lighting options. A vehicle search is a starting point; the installed system is the deciding check.
- Match the complete specification. Confirm fitting, technology and compatibility with the existing ballast. Do not force a bulb into a different holder or modify the base.
Does 6000K mean the bulb is brighter?
Colour temperature describes the appearance of the light, not its measured brightness. Our listed HID replacements use a 6000K white colour temperature. Luminous output is measured in lumens, and a higher Kelvin figure does not by itself establish more usable light on the road.
Should I replace one bulb or a pair?
Check the fault before buying: a lighting problem can involve the bulb, ballast, connection or another component. If replacement bulbs are needed, changing a pair can help keep their colour appearance consistent. A new bulb beside an older one may look different even when both have the same stated colour temperature.
What about D1S or D3S LED replacements?
An LED replacement is a different technology from a like-for-like HID bulb. A matching label alone does not establish compatibility with the headlamp, ballast, available space or vehicle electronics. Read the specific product’s fitting requirements and establish suitability for the intended use before choosing a conversion.
Need help identifying your bulb?
Send your vehicle make, model, year, headlamp type and a clear photo of the original bulb code. We can help you compare the listing details before you order. HID systems use high voltage; identification and fitting by a qualified technician are recommended if you are unsure.
