BMW X5 E70 air filters: M57 vs N57 and the OE number to check

Searching for an “X5 E70 air filter” is not enough to choose the correct part. Different engine versions use different filter arrangements, and registration year alone can lead you to the wrong replacement.

The quick answer

Confirm the engine code and original OE filter reference before ordering. Our filter with reference 13712247444 is listed for selected early E70 M57 applications. It should not be selected for a later N57 engine simply because the vehicle is an E70.

Why do two X5 E70 filters appear in searches?

The E70 model name spans different engine and build specifications. A listing may cover several BMW models, but that does not mean one filter fits every engine in those models. Part shape, dimensions, seals and the original airbox must agree with the replacement.

These references describe the two listings we checked; they are not an exhaustive X5 fitment chart. Other engines and specifications require their own part check.

How to check your filter in four steps

  1. Find the original reference. Check the marking on the existing filter or obtain the specified OE number from a vehicle parts record. If the installed filter is an aftermarket brand, its own part number may need cross-referencing.
  2. Confirm the engine and build date. Use a reliable vehicle record or ask a parts specialist to check the VIN. The first registration date is not always the build date.
  3. Compare the physical part. Check the shape, dimensions, end seals and how it sits in the original housing. A similar appearance is not a substitute for a reference match.
  4. Read the product page. Check the pack contents and any pre-filter details. Keep packaging until you have confirmed that the supplied part is correct.

What does “with pre-filter” mean on this listing?

The TTRP 13712247444 replacement is supplied as a filter insert with a pre-filter, as described on the product page. Compare the complete assembly with your original part and follow the vehicle’s service instructions. Do not assume that every visually similar insert has the same sealing arrangement.

When should an engine air filter be replaced?

Follow the vehicle’s service schedule and inspection guidance. Usage and conditions vary, so we do not recommend one universal mileage interval for every X5. If you are investigating poor running, confirm the cause rather than assuming a filter will resolve it.

Ask us before buying if the reference is unclear

Send your model, year, engine code, original filter reference and a photo of the filter or housing. If those details do not establish the match, a VIN-based parts check is the next step. BMW names and OE numbers identify applications; the TTRP item is an aftermarket replacement, not a genuine BMW part.
