Air filter fitting / FITTING GUIDE
BMW X5 E70 N57 air filter fitting guide
Fitting a replacement engine air filter to a compatible BMW X5 E70 3.0d N57D30A? Start by matching OE reference 13717811026, then follow the written checks below for your original airbox.
This guide accompanies our TTRP Racing N57 replacement air filter, listed for selected X5 E70 3.0d N57D30A applications from 2010–2013. Confirm the part by VIN or original filter reference. It is not a universal guide for every N57-powered BMW.
Check the application first
Match 13717811026 / 13 71 7 811 026 and compare the replacement with the existing filter before dismantling. An N57 engine code alone does not establish the airbox layout. The earlier M57 filter uses a different reference; see our M57 vs N57 filter comparison.
What to have ready
- The correct replacement filter and its packaging.
- A clean, lint-free cloth and a suitable means of removing loose dirt from the housing.
- Any hand tools required by the fasteners actually fitted to your vehicle.
- The vehicle-specific BMW service instructions if access requires additional parts to be removed.
Inspect the housing before choosing tools. Do not assume a bolt size or tightening torque from another engine or model.
Step-by-step replacement
- Prepare. Park securely, switch off the ignition and let the engine cool. Remove the acoustic cover as required by the vehicle procedure.
- Check the housing. Identify how the element is retained before pulling it. BMW’s N57 service information describes more than one arrangement.
- Release the correct retention. On a tab-and-turn arrangement, release the tab and turn the element in its marked release direction before lifting it. On a clamped-cover arrangement, release the front and rear clamps and lift the cover enough to withdraw the element. If neither matches your airbox, obtain the exact vehicle procedure.
- Remove and clean. Lift the old filter out carefully. Keep debris out of the clean-air outlet and clean the inside of the housing.
- Fit. Insert the matching element without bending it. Keep any lower fleece pre-filter flat and attached. Check that the sealing surfaces seat evenly.
- Reassemble. Secure the original retainers and refit the cover and any parts removed for access. Check that nothing is trapped or loose.
Final checks
Before starting, remove all tools and cleaning materials. Check the airbox closure, any disturbed intake connections and the engine cover. Do not force the housing shut to make an incorrect filter fit. If it will not close normally, reopen it and check the element position and part match.
Care after fitting
Follow the vehicle service schedule. Do not oil or wash this replacement insert unless TTRP supplies cleaning instructions for the exact product. Replacing a filter does not diagnose a running fault.
When to ask for help
This is a general fitting overview, not a substitute for the BMW procedure for your VIN. If the housing differs, clips are damaged or access requires unfamiliar dismantling, ask a competent technician. Send us your vehicle details, filter reference and a photo of the airbox if you need help identifying the product.
