Planning a brake upgrade: start with the whole system
A closer look at used pads, part selection and the checks that come before a brake upgrade.
Brakes deserve a place near the top of any project plan. This workshop photograph shows a set of used, yellow-backed EBC pads removed from a vehicle. It is a useful starting point for a conversation about inspection, rather than proof of remaining life or stopping performance.
Choose for the car and its use
Match the exact brake system and intended use before choosing a pad compound or disc. The badge on the boot does not establish the caliper, disc size or parts already fitted to a modified car. Confirm the current hardware and the manufacturer’s application information.
Inspect before ordering
Ask the fitter to assess pads, discs, calipers, hoses and fluid together. A photograph cannot confirm pad thickness, disc service limits or whether a component is safe to reuse. Record the measured condition and the part references so the next service starts with useful information.
Finish the job properly
Brake fitting, tightening and checks must follow the vehicle and component instructions. Use a qualified fitter if you are not competent to carry out the work. Follow the bedding-in instructions for the exact pad and disc combination; a generic routine may be unsuitable.
